Dot Sim – Jewellery
After graduating from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee in 2001 Dot travelled to Italy to do an advanced jewellery course at the Alchimia Jewellery School in Florence.
Her designs are inspired by the environment – starry skies, changing landscapes, horizons and the sea. Her jewellery is dramatic and sculptural while still wearable. She uses precious metals as she feels it is important to create heirlooms that can provide intimate memories for future generations.
Her work introduces the sensory element of aroma in the form of beads that contain the perfume or essential oil of the wearer’s choice which is released through body heat. Her pieces are designed to be handled and played with like worry beads to release stress. She uses gold, silver and stainless steel to produce a range of neckpieces, bangles, brooches, rings, earrings, worry beads and buttons.
She won the Bonhoga residency in 2003 and was invited to exhibit in the 13 Hands exhibition . She has won several awards and prizes and has exhibited across the UK as well as Munich, Barcelona and Brussels.
In 2006 she received a creative development award from the Scottish Arts Council which enabled her to attend a masterclass with jeweller Susan Cohn at North Lands Creative Glass. This has inspired a new range of work combining glass objects with jewellery which form an exhibition at the Scottish Gallery in Edinburgh from 11 September to 4 October 2006.
