About The Adam Pottery

Personal Statement

Come down the steps of this sunny corner basement on the fringe of the new town straight into the showroom of The Adam Pottery. The exciting variety of ceramics on display is all individually made on the premises, and covers a wide spectrum of form, function, making techniques, scale and prices. Prices range from £5 to £750.

Set up by Janet Adam in 1983, the former 19th century bakery now not only contains Janet's own workshop but offers studio space for several other ceramists. Over the years people have come for longer or shorter periods, many of them from overseas, bringing a great diversity of skills and concepts to the pottery.

At present, figurative and sculptural pieces, besides handbuilt and wheelthrown contemporary functional and decorative items, are all on display.

The workshops are open to visitors, who are very welcome to watch work in progress, talk to the makers, and maybe discuss commissions.

Janet's more traditional wheelthrown high-fired stoneware and porcelain pieces are mainly "one off" items, although she continues to make a small range of repeat domestic ware. From delicate porcelain bowls to imposing garden urns, the emphasis is on function, enhanced by decorative and colourful reduction-fired glazes.

The diversity of work available offers a wide and interesting choice of contemporary ceramics for the visitor.

Located at 76 Henderson Row, Edinburgh, EH3 5BT, we are open all year round and there is no admission charge. Opening times: 1100-1800 Monday-Saturday.

Our special Fringe Exhibition, Clay 2007, opens on 6th August and runs for the duration of the Edinburgh Fringe and International Festivals until 1st September. Venue 135
