About Rachel Hazell - Hazell Designs Books

Personal Statement

Contemporary bookbinding and artist's books, handcrafted using traditional techniques, exploring and subverting the iconic book form.

An educational background in the literature, craft and concepts of books has resulted in a broad and satisfying business. Hazell Designs Books produces limited editions, unique pieces, framed bookworks and sculpture. 'Island Journals', Rachel Hazell's first solo show, at the Bonhoga Gallery, Shetland, has led to exhibitions and installations becoming a principal area of current work. The belief that 'everybody has a book inside them' is a central philosophy of the bookbinding and bookart workshops run for all age groups, in a wide variety of locations: schools, art colleges, businesses, local councils and book festivals. (Island workshops a speciality!) Previous commissions include a two metre high book sculpture for the Helen Storey Foundation and a limited edition of love poems for John Hegley.

Any book-related work, particularly the curious and unusual, most welcome.
