Stuart makes a wide variety of handmade stoneware pots, domestic and decorative, including salt glazed pieces. He raw glazes and once fires using either a 60 ft³ wood-fired kiln, or a smaller 30 ft³ gas-fired salt-glaze kiln. He is very concerned that the pots feel good to use.
A love of walking the hills, or escaping in his boat allows time to observe and reflect. This inspiration is reflected in the work, with the colours and textures of the sea, mountains and wildlife of the islands.
The designs, colours and organic nature of Suzanne's coiled ceramic vessels are inspired by a life-long bond with the sea. Being further intrigued by Aboriginal cultural arts, Suzanne assembles multi-sized ceramic slab pieces into free-mounted and grouted pictures.
'Isle of Auskerry' makes products both traditional and modern ranging from Dolls House Rugs to blankets using the fleece, horn and sheepskins from our flock of North Ronaldsay seaweed-eating sheep. Most of our products are handmade in our island home where we cure the sheepskins, handclip the sheep, make the felt and design the woven products.
The felt is also decorated individually by hand to one-off designs. Our business aims to promote this rare breed by proving that these unique animals are commercially viable, and to show that their wonderfully unique characteristics of colourings, markings and fibre quality are worth preserving.
Each piece is hand raised from either silver, gilding metal or copper. The exterior is etched, as an invitation to the viewer to touch and hold the piece. Further marks are etched into the metal, and inlaid or coloured to contrast with the main body of the piece.
The inspiration for the vessels, comes from my homeland, from South Africa, her colours, her landscapes and textures and the crafts used by her people.

The Crafters is a retail co-operative, set up in 1998. We are a group of like-minded independent craft workers, who wanted to have a retail space in the high street that we could run ourselves.
Most of us have workshops tucked away in the country and only meet our customers - and each other - occasionally at craft fairs and local events. Joining forces has made it possible for us to have a shop to sell our wares, while at the same time being able to continue to run our workshops. We are now a thriving concern with thirteen members, supporting each other for our mutual benefit.
The Crafters offers a wide range of gifts for all occasions. From pottery, made to measure clothing, turned wood, children’s clothes, jewellery, art glass, silk and velvet scarves,hand-bags, hats, hand-made soap to prints and cards. In addition, we also have guest exhibitors throughout the year, bringing further variety, while at the same time giving an opportunity to other local craftspeople.
The Decca has space for exhibitions, workshops, training and offers creative residencies in two 3-bedroom cottages. Total accommodation up to 22 B&B or self-catering.
