Grainne Morton – Non Precious Jewellery
Grainne, who trained at Edinburgh College of Art, begins by collecting obscure and miniature objects which are both formed and found. The found materials can include pressed flowers, old buttons, shells, pebbles, sea glass, printed tin and graphics/print. She complements these with formed elements creating handmade objects such as enamel work, miniature drawings and punched metal shim. These are then grouped into ‘collections’.
Her work is popular in shops and galleries across the UK as well as Japan and America. She believes the Americans like her work because of the old materials as they enjoy objects with history.
She was one of twelve jewellers and six silversmiths selected to show their work in 100% Proof, which was curated by jeweller Dorothy Hogg. The exhibition created a snapshop of the quality, innovation and talent of jewellers and silversmiths in Scotland.
She has been selected to sell her work at Origin: the London Craft Fair in London during week one (3 to 8 October 2006).
Her work is held in collections in Montreal Museum of Fine Art and the National Museum of Scotland.
