The site specific installation by textile artists Jeanette Sendler and Barbara Ridland was part of an experimental photographic series informing work for the Seven Minutes of Explosion, an exhibition at Da Gadderie in Shetland Museum which is on until 19 May 2008.
The exhibition incorporates large works using spun and unspun Shetland yarn, and offers an interesting contrast between the hard physical stone scape of the quarry and the soft, delicate nature of woollen textiles.
During the two year project Jeanette concentrated on the history of the quarry while Barbara explored the man made structure, light, colours, and the scale of changes made by men tearing into the natural surface.
In her work Jeanette uses sewing, spinning, knitting, papermaking and specialises in felt making. She is trained in theatre costume design and has worked freelance for different theatre companies all over the world.
Barbara has knitted since childhood and studied at Grays School of Art, Aberdeen in 1980 specialising in drawing & painting. She became a lecturer for textiles at Shetland College in 1987. Now freelance, she designs for the international market including Japan, France, America and Italy and exhibits regularly in joint exhibitions on Shetland.
