John Creed - Metal

The gates at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow were created in 2006 by John Creed, designer and craftsman in metals, working with T&D Cruickshanks Ltd of Kirkintilloch.

He won the commission through a competitive selection process and the design had to suit the practical restraints of the site including the architecture, colours, practicality and function.

He chose stainless steel for these gates because it is strong and practical, and has a distinctive colour that complements the warm red of Kelvingrove’s historic brick and sandstone.

The twisting steel forms, with their subtle texturing, create a surface which seems to move with changing light patterns or when reflecting back the people entering and leaving the building.

A flask and tumblers, made by John for crime writer Ian Rankin as part of Silver of the Stars, will be on show in the Silver - Made in Scotland exhibition at the National Museum of Scotland from 25 january to 28 April 2007.

John, who is based in Glasgow, creates works of all sizes in a range of metals from gold to iron.  Find our more about his work at www.creedmetalwork.com
