Karin Muhlert – Paper

Karin completed a Master of Fine Art at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in Dundee in 2000. In her work she explores the possibilities of paper by tearing it apart and manipulating it into a new shape.

Her inspiration is organic form which she translates into paper. One of her core pieces is the ‘cell’- which she describes as ‘a small memento of the sea’ – and which developed as a concept from her walks along the beach in St Andrews in Fife. She makes these delicate and immaculate cells from paper, as well as other materials such as bronze, stone and silver.

She also produces one-off jewellery pieces.

Her work is held in the Private Collection of US fashion designer Donna Karan (DKNY) who bought her entire degree show at ‘New Designers’ in 2000.

She was one of the designers invited to take part in the innovative 13 Hands exhibition curated by a group of pupils at Caol Primary School in Fort William.
