Lise Bech - Willow Weaving

Lise, who grew up in Denmark, lives and works in the southern uplands of Scotland where she grows a wide range of willows.  The landscape is also a rich source of materials for her work.

In 2004 she received a Scottish Arts Council creative development award which enabled her to spend a week in Germany working with basketmaker Klaus Sayfang, whose work she has followed for many years, carrying out experimental work.

Over ten months her new asymmetric forms evolved as organic pod shapes and sculptural forms.  She describes this work as more feminine and expressive and feels there is a new rootedness with the gentle curves reflecting the relationship of the Southern landscape.

She held her first exhibition of this work in May 2005, the same year as she was accepted as a first time exhibitor for Chelsea Crafts Fair.

In summer 2006 Lise held her first solo exhibition ‘Cochuill’ at Taigh Chearsabhagh on North Uist which attracted 6,000 visitors.

She has recently sourced and propagated a new variety of very pale willow which she has used for new work along with a French variety which is almost black.

Her sculptural contour vase and landscape pods were selected by the Aram store to be shown in their Drury Lane store next to the classic Missoni table during Origin; the London Craft Fair 2006 . She was one of six finalists in the BBC Homes & Antiques magazine 'Talent around Britain’ in 2006 and was chosen by Channel 4's Grand Design magazine as one of their 'top ten to watch'.

She has an exhibition of new work at the Hill House in Helensburgh from 7 September to 31 October 2007.
