Lorna Fraser - Ceramics

Lorna is a graduate of Gray’s School of Art and the inspiration for her current ceramic work arises from an interest in gardens and gardening - observing the metamorphosis of plants over the changing seasons.  She is inspired by the shapes, structure and aesthetic appeal of these organic forms.

When translating these ideas into clay, she explores the sculptural quality of plants whilst also trying to capture their vulnerability, fragility and sensuality.

Each individual piece is hand built in white earthenware clay and finished with a matte white glaze.  There is no decoration on the works to give them a contemporary feel which pushes the form to the fore. The shadows they cast become an integral part of the piece.

Her work Ecklonia (Series 2) was inspired by seaweed washed up on the shores of Mull.

She is currently investigating the qualities of porcelain and stoneware clays to develop larger sculptures that can be placed in a garden environment and will be exhibiting in Contemporary Ceramics from Scotland and Japan at the Collins Gallery in Glasgow in 2007.
