I trained as a sculptor and art historian and lectured at Edinburgh College of Art for 25 years. Recently, I changed direction to make sculptural jewellery, specialising in unique statement pieces.
I work with precious metals and usually integrate handcrafted sterling silver and/or gold, with unusual semi-precious stones, precious gemstones or pearls. I aim to combine striking design with the sensual colours of natural stones, ranging from large-scale snakeskin serpentine to delicate black diamonds. For me, jewellery should also be a pleasure to touch, so tactile textures are important.
The ideas and imagery can come from anywhere – from fine art, textiles, gardens, literature. I hope the pieces conjure up other associations for the wearer.
I use both traditional and contemporary techniques such as photo-etching and fold-forming.
Chunky necklaces, dramatic earrings, big cuffs, brooches or cufflinks - each bespoke piece has its own personality. I like the way that bold one-off jewellery starts conversations.
Winner of the 2007 Russell Trust Award at Visual Arts Scotland.
