Gavin Robertson Furniture was set up in January 1992 to produce original designed handcrafted pieces of furniture. The Business has seen steady growth and has recently expanded into a 1700 square feet purpose built workshop at Abriachan near Inverness in the Scottish Highlands. Gavin admits that he is greatly inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement, details of which regularly flurry into his work. He thrives on making each piece truly individual – whether a table, chair, console table or even a complete kitchen – by inlaying exotic timbers into the design or simply by exploring new forms and lines. “Within the Arts and Crafts movement the ethos was in the construction and detail – it should be good, honest construction and the detail should be seen,” he says. “I try to follow that, but perhaps with a slightly more minimal turn on it. I like clean simple lines but also to give it that attention to detail with inlay, or in the construction, perhaps turning a dovetail joint out so that it can be seen. I think you have to remain true to your ideals and for me that means sticking to high quality finish.
