“Succulent.......Reubenesque.......pleasingly plump, curvaceous nudes who will make themselves at home anywhere......humorous in an understated way......Bums!”
After college, the female form became a vehicle in sculptural ceramics for the exploration of colour and materials. Primarily hand-built in paperclay, the smaller pieces begin as enclosed pinch pots while larger pieces are coil-built. Now attempting to work on a bigger scale, different clays are being used for higher firings, rendering the work frost resistant. Coloured slips and metal oxides are used to enhance the peaks and troughs. Firing ranges from 1080oC to 1220oC. Small, low-fired ladies are treated to colour through oil pastels. Large, higher fired pieces are left au naturale.
Raised in a warm climate that allowed a freedom that cooler climes do not, ‘ideal body’ time meant leisurely, active outdoor pursuits. Over the years these pursuits have decreased as everyday demands and pressures increase. Ideals are maintained and sustained by disciplined regime. My ladies represent the easing of regime. Through my consideration of movement and form I hope to convey the uninhibited comfort one should feel in one’s skin and the acceptance of one’s own self.
Current work also includes Memorial Ash Urns and slabbed wall pieces.
