Janet Adam's work is based on wheel thrown high-fired stoneware and porcelain, made for use and enjoyment. She has been making pottery in Edinburgh since the early '70's, her work evolving from mainly domestic ware to concentrating now on more individual pieces for indoors and out. She enjoys working on a wide scale of form, size and function, which allows for continuing development and exploration.
The more decorative pieces include delicate porcelain vases and bowls; wall plates with abstract land and seascapes; "apple" and "pear" containers and blank paged handbound books with richly-decorated covers. Functional items in a wide variety are also seen as individual pieces, although there is a small range of repeat domestic ware. Frost-proof garden urns and planters are on a larger scale; commissions are welcomed for customers' individual requirements.
The reduction-fired glazes are often intermingled, or overlaid with added oxides such as copper, iron and chromium, to give subtly colourful and sometimes surprising results. The general effect is premeditated but the final outcome of each piece is unique.
Most of Janet's work is sold directly from the pottery. She exhibits widely throughout Scotland, mainly in group exhibitions.
Visitors are welcome to watch work in progress. Located at 76 Henderson Row, Edinburgh, EH3 5BT, we are open all year round 11.00 - 18.00, Monday-Saturday and there is no admission charge.
The showroom has recently been refurbished, giving a more contemporary look to compliment work by the current six ceramists having their studios at the pottery. Janet's own more traditional work is also enhanced by the brighter surroundings!
