Joan Campbell specalises in re-caning and re-rushing antique chairs. She has a large selection of traditional and contemporary baskets for sale or can take commissions. She is a qualified teacher and holds various workshops all over Scotland. With the help of Central Scotland Forest Trust she has had many workshops for children held in woodland and park areas teaching them about willow and other indigenous plants grown in their local area such as Dogwood and Ash. She takes on lots of commissions for living willow structures woven in children's nurseries and special needs schools. She recently worked with Youth Scotland at Muiravonside Country Park building a willow shelter. She has exhibited her work at the Festival Hall London, Collins Art Gallery Glasgow, The Auld Kirk Museum Kirkintilloch and the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh. A nice selection of baskets can be seen on the steps of Culroos Palace Culroos. She is also a member of the Scottish Basketmakers Circle, Basketmakers Association, Loch Lomond Craft Association and East Dunbartonshire Craft Forum. She started her studies back in 1980 doing a city and guilds part 1&2 in basketry at the London College of Furniture London and started teaching for the ILEA doing day and evening classes for able and disabled students. The environment and nature are what influences her in deciding her choices of design, materials and colour in her work. She uses natural materials such as seagrass, willow, cane, rush and dogwood. The dogwood is recycled from the local council's waste depot under the heading green waste. She likes to mix willow and dogwood together as the colours complement each other. The types of baskets made range from small round children's baskets, shopping baskets, log baskets, fishing creels and butcher's bike baskets etc.
