Batik is a traditional method of applying colour to cloth associated with the Far East, and in particular Indonesia. Melted wax is brushed on to the fabric, and it resists absorption once the cloth is immersed in dye. Traditional batik work often involves simple monochromatic colour schemes, but modern techniques can produce a range of startling effects. I work on cotton nad silk using traditional Indonesian batik tools as well as brushes, wire, fork, cardboard ... to create wallhangings, cushions, waistcoats and scarves.
Inspiration for my work comes from geometric patterns, celtic knotwork and patterns found in nature - veins on a leaf, light on water. I like looking at the world close to. Designs are worked up from initial photographs and drawings, but I enjoy watching them come to life in dye, and the sometimes unexpected effects that appear. I am happy to undertake commissions, or run workshops.
