Jenny Deans’ work explores the relationship between the wearer and the jewellery, especially people’s love of playing with jewellery. This has led her to develop movable pieces which have fluidity and movement inherent in the form, and which encourage interaction.

The work in her collection arises from an interest in internal and external configurations, drawing from architecture and sculpture. Using pattern, rhythm, and repetition, she has developed her ideas into three-dimensional pieces, which explore volume and transparency of structures. The assembly of flat units into diverse, intelligent and attractive shapes allows the viewer to look through to see the outer and inner characteristics of the sculptural composition. Using repetitive layers and shapes in wire enables her to create arrangements giving a wonderful sense of volume and space. This encourages the viewer to see different perspectives simultaneously, producing an understanding of the volume within the form.

Jenny Deans is an Edinburgh based jeweller who graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 2002. She then worked as Artist in Residence in the Jewellery Department for 2 years before being awarded a Start-up Grant from the Scottish Arts Council with which she established her own workshop in Leith. In addition to making jewellery, Jenny also teaches Jewellery Evening Classes and Summer School Weeks at Edinburgh College of Art and Leith School of Art.
