Selection for Origin London, Scottish Arts Council Development Grant, Selected for Crafts Council Photostore
I design and make unique folding chairs, tables and other pieces of furniture for interior use. My work is both contemporary and functional and I generally work in wood although I do introduce other materials such as metal and glass where appropriate.
My current work is primarily created using laminating processes; layers of Birch Ply are glued together and formed in a mould. This use of bent forms combined with clean lines and minimal decoration, gives my work a strong sculptural presence.
These are strong elements within Scandinavian design, a design style that I have been heavily influenced by. Other strong influences in the development of my design identity include the work of the Shaker movement and their pragmatic approach to furniture design. Both of these distinct design styles have had the ability to create designs which are primarily functional and very minimal, yet at the same time subtly very beautiful, all of which I have tried to achieve within my own work. Another influence within my work, but to a lesser extent, has been Japanese design and their simplicity of line and form.
