I make non-functional pots. The potential of an empty vessel is exciting. The landscape and climate of Skye is increasingly important to my work. The
mountains in the distance and the ground under my feet. I want to produce, in clay, the colours, textures and forms of the land that has such a strong
influence on my life.
The pots are hand-built, coiled and press moulded. Form and texture are the primary elements. The shapes are bowls, bottles, jars - uncomplicated
contemporary forms. The highly textured surfaces are achieved by scraping and by taking clay pressings. These are emphasized with applied slips, glazes, oxides and terra sigilata. I use an iron oxide from the algal bloom of a local spring giving the work a physical connection to the landscape.
Most of my work has been raku-fired although I am increasing my use of colour through oxidation firings.
