Having travelled up from London, Jessica studied her BA (Hons) and MDES Glass at Edinburgh College Of Art. In her work, she focuses on family and the concept of the perfect home.
"The perfect face, the perfect breasts, the perfect home! All women strive for perfection – in a search for perfection are we losing a grasp of reality?”
Germaine Greer, The Whole Woman (London, 2002)
My work emerges from my life experiences; I use these to make a personal comment using the physical properties of glass as an instigator. For my recent works I used family experiences as a starting point and researched areas such as feminism, psychology, play therapy and philosophy in order to gain a greater understanding. Taking this idea of Perfection I looked into concepts of childhood, families and more materially the houses we are brought up in. From this I selected key memories and aspects to focus my work on.
Playing with detail, scale and the familiar, her overall show is fun yet eerie. "My work emerges from personal experiences, I use this to make a personal comment, using the physical nature of glass as an instigator."
Jessica was also short-listed for the Bombay Sapphire Glass prize 2005 and is in the touring Blue Room exhibition.
