Intarsia is a mosaic of wood, fitted and glued into a wooden support. The ancient art of intarsia inspired both marquetry and wood-inlay and works of this sort are found in ancient histories as far back as the eighth century. Intarsia was originally made by sinking shapes into a rep-arranged design, the hollows then being filled with pieces of different coloured woods.

Today, Sidlaw Woodcrafts uses a whole range of hardwoods and its aim is to show the qualities of the materials with which it is working, to best advantage. In the designs, some of the pieces are raised to give a 3D effect to the plaques and pallet dyes are sometimes used to further enhance the designs which have been specially chosen to give pleasure.
There are over one hundred designs to chose from making sure that there is something for every taste or occasion.
