Encaustic art made from beeswax. Beeswax is obtained from a bee-keeper in the south of Scotland and is prepared by the artist into a usable form. The wax is heated and cleaned, left in the sun to lighten, it is then heated again and resin and pigment is added. The wax is lightfast and does not have to be framed behind glass to preserve the colour.
Wax is painted using various heated tools such as an iron, stylus, hotplate etc. onto encaustic paper, canvas, wood and glass. The different surfaces give each pictures a very different appearance and texture.
I get my inspiration from nature. In Botswana the Okovango Delta gave inspiration, in Namibia the desert, and in Scotland the majestic mountains and the intense colour and light. All of this comes back in my work in various ways.
