I discovered wood lettercarving in 1999, after a working background in architectural design and furniture making. Through lettercarving I have become more interested in words and poetry, letterforms and calligraphy. I work mainly in the traditional way with hand tools, carving incised letters and exploring the possibilities of hardwood as a vehicle for lettering using natural finishes as well as ebonising, charring, and painting.
I enjoy doing commissioned work as well as my own work for exhibition. I am also interested in exploring the feasibility of a product range.
Past work has included poetry, Buddhist and Christian quotations, song representations, house names and personal initals. Wood types have included oak, brown oak, elm, yew, cherry, pear, sycamore and ripple sycamore. I am interested in the letterforms of other cultures.
I mostly work at home, but have carved on site and have access to various workshops for machining or can commission any machining required.
My work so far can be seen as both carved calligraphy and carved typography. I am interested in moving beyond this way of working, exploring lettering in a more free-form sculptural way.
