My work comprises gas fired functional ceramic pieces for daily use that have been deeply influenced by a three year traditional apprenticeship in Japan. This time in Japan first sparked my interest in the concept of 'shibui'. In an artistic sense 'shibui' describes a sober, quiet understated quality, objects without superfluous adornment. My work reflects this by its simple decoration, unevenness of surface and honesty to the material and methods from which it is created. My glazes are in soft natural tones, some decorated with patterns and motifs drawn from nature.
