Since discovering the ancient art of feltmaking, Lee has been converted to the use of unspun wool as a raw material. Over many years of experimentation, she has developed a personal style which is predominantly influenced by the physical three-dimensional qualities of the felting process. An enduring interest in the use of natural raw materials and a fascination with the use of texture has led to the production of pieces which are both intricate and tactile.

The feltmaking process consists of a combination of layering, heating, wetting, rolling and pressing the unspun wool by hand to produce a piece of fabric. The decorating process takes place at the dry stage when the minute fibres can be manipulated to create an image. Areas of colour and softly textured fibres are skilfully blended to convey an impressionistic yet contemporary feel to the work.

Initially inspired by the Cumbrian and Scottish landscape, her work has broadened to include a wide range of subjects mainly concentrating on portraiture. Her most recent work is concerned with exploring human connections with each other and their environment and she is currently developing her portfolio of portraits and soft shapes based on the human form.
