Meg Hamilton - Metal

Meg, a graduate from Manchester Polytechnic, is inspired by a wide range of things from fine art and architecture to nature to the city environment, but she always remains true to her materials.

She says about working in metal “It’s a messy, dirty business and it’s hard physical work – everything is intensively hand built.  Using fine metalwork techniques taken from jewellery making, forge work and industrial processes I make a range of domestic and garden constructed metalwork.

“I currently work mostly with mild steel wire – fence wire but also combine other metals and found objects.  Finish is very important and the objects I make are never as rough as the materials involved.”

The main strand of her work is a range of fireguards and log baskets in a number of styles including exploded leaf and flower patterns and abstract patterns utilising wire left over from other projects.

She is exhibiting at the Collins Gallery in September in Green, an exhibition of work using recycled materials by members of design Ed, a group of Edinburgh based designers.
