About Art'n'That - Matt Russell Textiles

Personal Statement

I’m currently studying at Grays School of Art, Aberdeen where I initially focused in weave – winning the Weavers guild Award in 2011 branching into knit, I am currently working now in Print design and mixed media.

In 2012 I was chosen to participate in an innovation and future links program run by the UK Government to study in Nanjing China. While there I was hugely I was greatly inspired by detail and intricacy of textiles, which has inspired and developed my own attention to detail.

I began ARTnTHAT as my online signature over 3 years ago which documents my textiles, design work, photography and research. My blog and has became increasingly popular with over 20,000 hits since it began since its creation. This has led to me being approached by STV (ITV – Scottish version) where I regularly write an online blog showcasing my work.
Art is a major influence in my design work – especially Aubrey Beardsley, Erté and Salvador Dali.

As a keen photographer I like to do a lot of primary research allowing me to get a first hand insight into the topic. I then create drawings and combine these with my digital designs to add an element of depth to my work. Taking these designs I screen print, laser cut, digital print and embellish depending on the outcome I’m looking for. E.g. When I was designed for Trump Golf Scotland in the creations of an Avant garde capsule collection I found it interesting to work with the fashion designers to see the way in which other people develop their ideas which I feel can make your own working process stronger.

I love Screen-printing, I fell in love a few years ago at The Glasgow Print Studio and have since developed from paper onto fabric Screen Printing. I find its fundamental to all print design and at the core of all my work – something may look interesting on a paper design but when it is screen-printed it has the chance to become something spectacular.

I have mainly worked within the boundaries of Fashion, working for two years as designer and blogger at an independent Fashion Accessories company in Aberdeen, and more recently completing my internship with On|Off at London and Paris Fashion Week. I would, however, like to expand into interiors and I feel winning the Bradford Textiles Society Award is the start of something progressive and exciting for my work.
