About Me

Personal Statement

Rachel Skene graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 2001. After working for two months as Woven Textile Designer for a company in Calcutta, India she decided to move back to Tongue and set up her own business.

Skene Textile Design started in January 2003.

Working as a freelance designer from a studio based in Tongue in north Sutherland handwoven fabric, fashion accessories and interior pieces are produced on a large floor loom.

Fibres such as silk, cashmere and lambswool may be mixed with fancy yarns, sequins, ribbon or suede to create a beautifully soft, luxurious piece of material .

Pattern and layers of process are employed to create one-off original designs. Hand painting or printing onto the warp produces unique results when combined with woven structure or distorted through varying tensions. After weaving further techniques such as stitching and smocking may be used to add shape, volume or another layer of pattern.

These contemporary pieces are to be enjoyed by those who appreciate the time, skill and creativity which is involved and who seek out original handcrafted work to wear or admire.
