About Me
Personal Statement
Cathrine Holtet is a Norwegian artist based in Dundee. Her passion for working with clay was ignited when doing a one-year course in ceramics at Agder Folkehøyskole in Søgne, Norway, from 1995-1996. She then went on to complete a BDes(Hons) in ceramics at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, where she graduated in 1999.
Cathrine is fascinated by the properties of porcelain – it’s purity, whiteness and translucency. Since her final year at art college she has specialised in the technique of water-etching (or shellac resist) on cast and thrown porcelain pieces, creating delicate relief patterns that are brought to life as light passes through the porcelain walls. Using this technique she makes everything from tea-light holders to sculptural light pieces.
A keen photographer, Cathrine uses her camera to gather inspiration in the natural world – photographing everything from majestic mountains to macro images of flowers and seashells.
Her work is shown at various galleries across Scotland. Some of her regular galleries include the Oathlaw Gallery near Forfar, and the DiRollo Gallery and Marchmont Gallery in Edinburgh. She also participates in craft fairs like Potfest and other events.
