Take part in the craftscotland MOSAIC feature

For our November 2010 newsletter we want to focus on registered craftscotland mosaic makers.

In particular, we would love to hear:

    * How you got involved with your craft,
    * Where/how you were trained,
    * What you make, and why,
    * What particular challenges you face,
    * What you like most about your craft,
    * What you have coming up for the year

There is no specific word count for this - the more information you can provide, the richer our features will be. We normally take a few paragraphs of information from each maker contributing which best showcase their craft. Please write your answers in the first person (i.e. "I attended...").

We’d also like to build up a gallery of craft, so would love to receive a few images of your work. Images can be any size, but no less than 500px wide is preferred, and good quality. If you do send an image, please include the title and copyright information where appropriate.

Please send your contribution by email to laura@craftscotland.org. Images and any word documents can be attached to the email.

If you are taking part in any events or exhibitions, please let us know the details of these for the website too.

Where appropriate, we want to use the information you provide (in full or in part):

    * on the newsletter,
    * on the 'explore craft' section of the website (including news and events), to further understanding of craft and encourage the public to find out more,
    * on the 'sector support' section of the website, to provide guidance to people looking to make a career in craft.

For more information, or to take part, please send an email to me at laura@craftscotland.org or call 0131 524 9424 to discuss.

Laura Anderson, craftscotland

Craft Curators’ Forum 2010 - Crafts Council

This year’s Craft Curators’ event is a two-day programme featuring presentations and a studio visit. The theme is Craft & New Technologies, exploring issues around how to collect, curate, conserve, display and interpret this burgeoning aspect of contemporary craft practice.

We are seeing exciting and innovative new work being created as an increased number of makers, designers and artists explore digital and new technologies in their practice. New technologies are also permeating the museum environment and influencing the way objects are displayed and interpreted, forming new relationships between object and viewer.

For the curator these new developments present a number of challenges; such as how do we collect these works? How do we approach issues of display and interpretation? And how are such works stored, documented, and cared for?

The programme for Day 1 is a series of talks that explore some of the contemporary curatorial issues around the collecting, curating, conserving, displaying and interpreting of digital and digitally produced works. Held at the Whitechapel Gallery, speakers include Max Fraser – design author, curator and editor and publisher of LONDON DESIGN GUIDE; Ele Carpenter – curator, artist and researcher in visual arts and new media culture; Janis Jefferies – Professor of Visual Arts in the Department of Computing, Goldsmiths University of London and Louise Shannon – curator and Deputy Head of Contemporary Programmes, V&A.

Day 2 features a tour of Metropolitan Works, one of the UK’s largest Digital Manufacturing Centres. Two makers will accompany the tour, introducing how they use the facilities, and how this is shaping studio practice today.

23-24 September 2010, 9:30 to 17:00

Location: Whitechapel Gallery, 77-82 Whitechapel High Street, London, E1 7QX

Scottish Autumn Trade Fair

Scotland’s Autumn Trade Fair has moved to Glasgow with a doubling of the number of exhibitors. Taking place from Sunday 19th-Monday 20th Sept 2010 at the SECC the show gives retailers an opportunity in Scotland to source final stock for Christmas.

With a good range of large and small gifts, jewellery and clothing exhibitors it provides the ideal platform for exhibitors, targeting their goods specifically for the Christmas market and for retailers to make last minute orders.

Mark Saunders, MD of Springboard says: “Following last year’s highly successful autumn fair in Stirling we have had to move to a larger venue due to the demand for stands. We are hoping for 120 stands across the gift, jewellery, accessory, home and clothing sectors.

“Given the uncertainty of the marketplace and the economy many retailers are not keen to purchase stock too far in advance and this type of show will be perfect for late orders.”

The show will have a mix of Scottish and international suppliers and will include the following exhibitors: Lomond Books, Pewtermill, On a String, Snapdragon, Giftelope, Button Bothy, Alicia MacInness, All Fired Up, Saffron Winds, Ladycrow Silks, Highland Stoneware, Ness, Sprint Clothing, Arran Aromatics, Belltrees Forge, Scott Inness, Best Kept Secrets, Hansson, Smith & Canova, Sheila Fleet, Dekassa, Angela Learoyd, Heritage Playing Card, Pigment Productions and many more.

There are many new exhibitors such as: Gillian Kyle, Hearts & Crosses, Rosa Red, Slimbridge Soaps, My Baboo, The Just Slate Co, Lazy Daisy Glass, Taurus Leather, Star Glass, Kapre Scarves, For Every Body, dcuk, Urban Outline, Cosy, Hinnigan, Lionite Mele and Tattimole.

Glasgow’s fashionistas will be flocking to The Hub at Pacific Quay on Thursday 30 September 2010 for The Swish, a fabulous evening of clothes swapping and shopping.

The latest fashion craze to hit the city, ‘Swishing’ is cool, ethical, environmentally friendly – and on this occasion it’s all for charity.

All proceeds from the event - which will feature a massive clothes swap, craft market, live auction of celebrity outfits, style advice, pampering treatments and live music - will go to Scottish Huntington’s Association, a registered charity helping people throughout Scotland affected by Huntington’s disease.

Running from 6.30pm – 10pm on Thursday 30 September 2010, The Swish will also feature a craft market of unique, handmade products such as jewellery, homewares, fashion and interior accessories; a live auction of outfits and items donated by some special guests; personal style advice and mini-pampering treatments; and some fabulous live music. Tickets are just £10 in advance (or £12 on the door) and include fizz and cupcakes - and The Hub bar will be open throughout the evening.

We’re looking for lovely crafty businesses selling unique, high quality handmade products to be part of our craft market at The Swish.

If it’s creative and crafty - and handmade of course - we want to hear from you!

Give us a description of what you do, attach some low resolution jpegs of your work and include your name and contact details - and details of your website if you have one.

Stalls cost just £50 (includes table, chair, tablecloth and electricity supply) and stallholders keep 100% of the income from sales on the night.

Please contact Valerie Ross on Valerie.ross@hdscotland.org or on 0141 848 0308 for more details and a booking form.

Girl Geek Scotland is hosting a series of workshops to complement our Speaker Series 2010 on ‘Creativity, Computing and Entrepreneurialism’. The workshops, which are aimed at women who are thinking about starting, or have recently started, a Scottish business, will work around themes that will target what we believe are existing weaknesses in female business culture, namely: Negotiation, Funding Strategies, and Creativity in Business.

These workshops are aimed at women with an interest in technology- your background is less important than your enthusiasm and desire to follow a tech/creative project through. A diverse range of people is expected to attend with backgrounds in design, art, computer science, engineering, nursing, photography- the list is endless. You will be required to bring a project with you- at the end of each workshop you should have developed a workable strategy that will allow you to complete this project using new skills and resources gained during the weekend.

The workshops run from Friday through till Sunday and will be held at the Barcelo Hotel in Stirling. The hotel, dinner and workshop tuition is fully funded if you meet our criteria.

They will start on Friday evenings with dinner, drinks and networking and a few activities. On Saturday and Sundays the workshop runs all day and you can work as late as you need. On Sunday there will be more supported project work and will finish around 4pm.

If you have a prospective business partner (male or female) you can apply for two places in one application. However, funding only covers eligible participants, so please check our eligibility criteria which are detailed on the call for participation at http://www.girlgeekscotland.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=41&Itemid=3
