In her work Sarah explores fibre optic technology within textiles, creating innovative and unconventional textiles.
A graduate of Heriot-Watt University in Galashiels, she first become fascinated in fibre optics when Edinburgh Science Festival visited the Opto-Electrics department at the university. This led to her investigating different types of optical fibre and weaving techniques.
She discovered that the weaving process caused sufficient light loss along the length of end-glow optical fibres to create a visual sensation of colour and light in her textiles. She uses unconventional yarns, particularly light sensitive yarns, in conjunction with optical fibres.
In recent work she has collaborated with sound and sensor experts to create interactive, multi sensitive artworks which stimulate hearing and touch as well as sight.
