Applications Invited for Talente 2009

craftscotland has been invited to act as ‘mentors’ organising the collation and selection of Scottish applications for Talente 2009.

Talente is Europe’s most prestigious juried competitive exhibition, showcasing excellence and innovation by talented young and emerging makers working in the fields of crafts, design and technology under the age of 30.

Part of the annual Munich International Trade Fair, it has taken place in March each year since 1979 and welcomes around 175,000 visitors.  The exhibition is held in an area of 600 m², and takes place alongside Schmuck, the international jewellery exhibition.  The 2009 exhibition takes place from 11 to 17 March 2009 in Munich, Germany.

An international jury selects the winner of the Talente prize, and the exhibition is accompanied by a quality catalogue

The work is of a very high standard; in 2008 they received 330 applications from 30 countries, and selected 99 exhibitors from 23 countries.

Recent Scottish exhibitors have included: 2006 – Rebecca Wilson, ceramics, 2005 - Gavin Burnett , ceramics, Nicola Cairns, glass; 2004 Hannah Cridford, glass, Ben Murdock, ceramics, Andrea Walsh, ceramics/glass; 2003 – Susan O’Byrne, ceramics; 2002 – Grant McCaig, silversmithing, Andrew Lamb, jewellery.

Each maker is asked to provide an exhibit of from one to eight pieces (depending on scale) made within the last two years. Applicants need to have an existing body of work available, and photographed, as full details of the intended exhibits must be listed in the application form and are then used in the catalogue if they are successful.

Applicants must be under 30 by the 1 March 2009.

Makers must have trained at an art college and have completed their full time education, postgraduate included.  For applications through craftscotland, and to be considered for support from the Scottish Arts Council, the maker must be based in Scotland.

The Scottish Arts Council usually assists Scottish exhibitors with the costs of visiting the exhibition and of insuring and transporting the work to the collection point in London, where transportation is then organised by the Crafts Council.

The deadline for applications via craftscotland is Wednesday 1 October 2008.

Application forms will be available soon to download from the craftscotland website – to register in advance to receive details send your name, age, discipline and e-mail address to enquiries@craftscotland.org
