An exhibition of fine furniture constructed from RBGE timber windblown during Cyclone Andrea in 2012, highlighting the beauty of Scottish-grown timber and craftsmanship.
Five years on from when Cyclone Andrea caused devastation to trees at the Botanics in Edinburgh and across Scotland, After the Storm considers the legacy of this dramatic ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ event. This project has been created to explore the theme of regeneration, and celebrate recovery and resilience following a storm.
Members of the Scottish Furniture Makers Association were invited to interpret this theme and produce furniture from salvaged timber from storm-damaged RBGE trees. Twelve original designs were selected based on their unique explorations of rejuvenation and resilience and these pieces demonstrate the masterly skills of some of Scotland’s best craftsmen.
By transforming the fallen trees into beautiful, useful objects, the furniture makers highlight the continuing cycle at the heart of the natural world and remind us that disaster and disturbance drive regeneration.
In December and January the exhibition closes at 3.45pm.
In February the exhibition closes at 4.45pm.
From March to May the exhibition closes at 5.45pm
In partnership with the SFMA and Forestry Commission Scotland. Free entry.
