This exhibition presents furniture makers in an artistic setting and the artist in the exacting environment of furniture design.

The SMART gallery presents a curated exhibition of 5 contemporary furniture makers and a sculptor to allow them to step out of their comfort zones and explore the hand of the craftsman, the mind of the designer and the eye of the artist.

Participating makers are:

  • Doug Cocker
  • John Galvin
  • Joachim King
  • Colin Parker
  • Jonathan Rose
  • Angus Ross

Each contemporary maker is curious in different ways:

  • Doug Cocker RSA renowned Scottish sculptor creates work that is about craftsmanship - dealing with and exploring materials; it is also about dealing with ideas, symbolism and feelings.
  • John Galvin specialises in the application of traditional cabinet making methods to design unique pieces of bespoke furniture that will intrigue and captivate.
  • Joachim King strives to bring new and unusual forms to the functions of furniture.
  • Colin Parker brings creative flare to the domestic environment in his bespoke carpentry.
  • Jonathan Rose works in native UK solid hardwood, celebrating its colour and character in his designs. He particularly enjoys modular furniture as something, which has inherent flexibility and offers personal choice.
  • Angus Ross bends, moulds, sculpts and folds wood to create remarkable furniture.
