Radical Craft - Alternative Ways of Making
From: 08/04/2017 To: 10/06/2017 10:00 - 17:00
Location: The Barony Centre, Craft Town Scotland, 50 Main Street, West Kilbride KA23 9AR
Featuring 34 international and UK artists who express their creativity beyond the bounds of convention. A Craft space and Outside In national touring exhibition.
The exhibition, which is co-curated by Laura Hamilton, showcases artworks by historically renowned artists associated with Outsider Art alongside contemporary artists. Some of these artists are self-taught, and all artists see themselves as facing barriers to the art world for reasons including health, disability, social circumstance or isolation. For UK artists, an open callout was made and many artists were discovered during a national series of Surgery Days managed by Outside In. Over half the artists in the exhibition are associated with specialist centres, groups and studios who play a vital role in nurturing and supporting their creative development.
The artworks convey personal visions of the world, reveal inventive uses of materials and vary in scale. From miniature sculptures carved into toothpicks and lead pencil tips, to vehicles made from recycled scrap, and from life.
The exhibition runs from Saturday 8 April to Saturday 10 June 2017.
Entry is free but donations are put to good use in supporting the ongoing exhibition and events programme. To launch the show, Laura Hamilton will provide a guided tour of the exhibition from 2.30pm on Saturday 8 April.
The Barony Centre is open 10am until 5pm Monday to Saturday and 12noon until 5pm on Sunday.
