What’s On FAQs & Criteria

What is the Craft Scotland What’s On listings?
What’s On is a hand-picked list of craft events, exhibitions, classes and courses taking place in Scotland. The individual listings direct our website visitors to places they can see and buy high-quality craft, meet makers, learn about, participate in and engage with craft. We also publicise classes run by professional makers with the aim of developing participants’ understanding of craft and supporting makers to make additional income.

What are the criteria for listing an event or class?
Craft Scotland list events or classes which showcase, demonstrate or teach contemporary craft. Events should be run by, exhibit the work of, or have a strong connection to at least one professional maker who is producing work that meets our funding remit. Events may also be endorsed or run by a professional organisation that supports makers. Classes and courses should create opportunities for participants to meaningful engage with craft and/or enhance the craft skills of those participating, as well as other benefits like health and wellbeing.

How do I add an event to the Craft Scotland What’s On listings?
To add a listing you first need to register via Submit. Once registered, you can then sign in and select Submit an Event on the What’s On pages.

How long will it take my listing to appear on the What’s On listings?
Once submitted, we review every event uploaded to the Craft Scotland website. If eligible, we aim to add your listing to the site within 14 working days.

What kind of events do you accept?
Because of our funding remit, Craft Scotland can only list events that fit our accepted craft disciplines. Whilst we will consider mixed events and exhibitions, we cannot list events which purely relate to fine art, painting, drawing, photography, printing on paper, stationery, taxidermy, candle, soap or cake making, or jewellery made by the assembly of bought in materials.

Do I have to pay to add a listing?
No. The Craft Scotland What’s On pages are completely free to add an event listing.

Will my event appear on your site exactly as I have submitted it?
Craft Scotland will review your submission, and may edit it for spelling, grammatical or other purposes. See our Terms & Conditions for the full information on user-generated listings.
If you have a Maker or Place profile in our Directory, this listing will also appear on your profile.

Opportunities FAQs & Criteria

What do you consider to be an Opportunity for makers?
The listings you see on www.craftscotland.org were accepted because they will help a Scotland-based maker to develop a sustainable creative and business practice. This can take the form of funding, bursaries, awards or grants, jobs, commissions, submission requests for exhibitions, fairs, markets, shops or other craft events, and business training. We won’t list any opportunities that we consider unfair/exploitative of makers.

Do you list unpaid positions?
Craft Scotland is committed to ensuring that makers are paid fairly and appropriately for their time and effort. We recognise the value of volunteering in the arts and that there is value in makers having access to relevant work experience, shadowing and mentoring opportunities (where it is offered and arranged properly). We will only approve voluntary opportunities if they are upfront about being unpaid and offer a genuine opportunity to gain experience or collaborate. Craft Scotland is a Living Wage employer and we adhere to the Scottish Artist Union’s guidelines on fair pay. We hope our partners, supporters and audiences will follow our example.
