Level: Intermediate – Students will be working on a small scale so hand/eye coordination and patience are a must for this session. You should already have the jewellery basics under your belt such as sawing, filing, and soldering.
Join CSSJ for an Octopus Setting workshop and add this contemporary and imaginative stone-setting technique to your jewellery making repertoire. Octopus setting is the technique whereby a stone is set snugly into a jump ring of gold or silver, giving an overall look similar to that of octopus suckers! This one-day workshop provides an exciting opportunity to grasp the principle and practical application of both textural and smooth octopus settings. In this class, you will learn how to create the setting and set round stones into a piece of jewellery. You will practice in copper, setting different-sized cabochons, and once confident move on to work in silver.
Techniques covered:
- Choosing the correct stones for the octopus setting
- Create the perfect jump rings for your settings
- Making your own setting tool
- Pushing the metal around the stone to hold it in place permanently
