TUTOR: MARION SMITH

Learn to hand carve a relief panel in Limestone on this new course led by Marion Smith.

Egyptian and Assyrian civilisations used this soft, evenly textured stone to make exquisite relief carvings such as the lion hunt reliefs. This two-day course focuses on hand carving a relief panel in limestone measuring approximately 360mm x 255mm (between A4 and A3) and 30mm thick.

Over the course you will:

  • Be guided through the process from transferring your design to carving in relief.
  • Be given on safe working practice, which tools are appropriate for different tasks and how to use and maintain them.
  • Techniques towards finalising your carving will be demonstrated.

The course will take place outside in Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop’s unique outdoor working area.

Prior experience required: none
