UK Open Awards - Applications Now Open

Unlimited's UK Open Awards are now accepting submissions from disabled artists in England, Scotland and Wales.

Closing date: 2 Oct 2023

Are you a disabled artist based in England, Scotland, or Wales?

Do you work in drama, dance, music, visual arts (including contemporary craft), literature, and/or combined arts?

The UK Open Awards are open in name and open in nature to unlock and unleash your ideas. This year, we’re looking for artists who wish to create and share a new piece of work.

Made possible with the support of Arts Council EnglandArts Council of Wales, and Creative Scotland, we’re delighted to offer nine awards for UK-based disabled artists across England, Scotland, and Wales.

For artists based in Scotland:

We have two awards available: one award of £15,000 and one award of £45,000.

Who can apply?

The UK Open Awards are open to:

  • professional disabled artists and/or a disabled-led companies

  • based in England, Scotland, or Wales

  • aged 18+

  • not in full-time education

What kind of work are we looking for?

For these commissions we’re looking for artists that wish to create and share a new piece of work.

Your work can fall into any of the following artforms: drama, dance, music, visual arts (including contemporary craft), literature, and/or combined arts.

The only areas that we don’t support are fashion, architecture, and film. This isn’t because we don’t value and love them, but because the conditions of our funding don’t cover these artforms.

The work should aim to be:

  • High quality

  • Disabled-led

  • Innovative and ambitious

  • The work has the potential to reach multiple, diverse venues and audiences

  • The artist and/or company has a track record of creating work and reaching audiences

This criteria is what we will use to assess your application.

Our aim is to support a range of ideas in relation to artform, diversity, scale, and location.

How to apply

We have a two-stage application process aimed at protecting artist’s time and energy.

Stage 1: Expression of interest (EOI)

The Expression of interest (EOI) application is all about establishing if your ideas are eligible.

In your application we need you to tell us about your project idea, the artform you are using, and if your project is disabled led. We also want to know roughly how much you think it will cost, and a little detail on how developed the idea is. We’ll ask you to share examples of previous work, and to fill in our equality of opportunities form.

Application deadline: Monday 2 October 2023, midday
