University of Edinburgh Heritage Collections are seeking expressions of interest from a range of creative practitioners to produce facsimiles of heritage objects for their public handling collections.
Closing date: 22 Feb 2026
The University of Edinburgh Heritage Collections are currently developing handling collections for use with communities in and around Edinburgh. Part of this work includes the creation of facsimiles of objects currently in the university’s collections that can be transported out into the community and handled by the public. Some recent examples include 3D printed musical instruments, models of anatomy and bones, 18th century illustration books, and a Phantasmascope stand and disks.
The current heritage collections can be viewed here
The potential range of objects is very wide, and University of Edinburgh Heritage Collections are therefore seeking expressions of interest from a wide range of creative practitioners (professionals or students) including artists, designers, prop makers, set designers, illustrators, product designers, etc.
All and any work commissioned will be paid at an hourly rate plus materials. Due to the extensive nature of potential objects, payment for work will be discussed with any selected practitioners.
Please email your expression of interest, including details of previous professional experience and examples of work to smcgugan@ed.ac.uk by 11:55pm and 22nd February 2026. This may be sent in a portfolio style pdf, presentation, video, etc.
