‘Bole’ comprises a series of wall sculptures, hand-carved in local timber. Their forms are characterised by intertwining loops and knots, with each separate linked element carefully excavated from one piece of wood. Sections have been painted red, using pigment made from ochre gathered on Skye. The title refers to the mass of the timber from which the linked forms are carved; and is also a term for the red layer of earth.

Laura Welsh is a sculptor and furniture maker based on the Isle of Skye. She studied Fine Art for her undergraduate at The Ruskin School of Art in Oxford, and went on to complete a masters in Design + Make at the Architectural Association in Hooke Park, Dorset. Her work has been exhibited at Dundee Design Festival 2024, Harvest with Craft Scotland in Edinburgh 2025, and her sculpture ‘Red Knot’ won a Wood Award in 2025.
