FLOCK Exhibition Curator

Upland is looking for 2 Emerging Artist Curators to take on responsibility for further exhibition and touring opportunities for FLOCK.

About the role:

This is a temporary 2-month internship for emerging artists or makers who are interested in developing their skills in curatorship, with free mentoring and training opportunities from experienced artists and curators. Successful applicants will take on the responsibility of project management for arranged exhibitions, liaising with Upland and building partnerships with other organisations in order to arrange further exhibition opportunities.  

Upland is looking for 2 Emerging* artists/makers to take on the paid freelance role of FLOCK Exhibition Curators. To be eligible for this opportunity, you must live in Dumfries and Galloway, class yourself as an emerging or early-career artist/maker* according to the below definition, and be available to meet the requirements of the role as outlined in the document linked below. 

*Emerging / early career – a general definition: 

Open to emerging artists or makers, 5 years (or less) out of University, Art School or College as well as those without a formal qualification who can evidence commitment to an emerging practice which is less than 5 years’ in its development. However, we realise everyone’s situation is different so if you have any queries please just contact us. There is also room on the application form to explain why you consider yourself an ‘emerging’ practitioner.

About the project:

FLOCK is a collaborative participatory making project, enabling a large number of children and young people to gain hands on experience with clay working with ceramic artists.

Funded by The Holywood Trust and Creative Scotland, led by ceramic artist Frances Ross, and supported by artists Clare Dawdry and Ruth Jones, the project engaged young people from 57 schools and settings across the region, giving children and young people the chance to experience the grounding properties of clay while supporting classroom learning and a sense of place in their home of D&G.

Inspired by local landscapes and birdlife, pupils have created over 1,200 individually made ceramic birds, to be brought together in one striking outdoor installation. The very first FLOCK exhibition was displayed as part of Spring Fling 2026 at Barwhillanty Estate.
