Spirit of Spark

Public Art Commission: Celebrating the life and work of Dame Muriel Spark.

Closing date: 11 Jan 2026

Morag and James Anderson wish to commission a permanent work of art celebrating the life and work of Muriel Spark for the city of Edinburgh. An open competition is being organised and artists from all genres/media/practices are invited to register interest.

The project will create and install a memorial to Muriel Spark. This important cultural initiative seeks to commemorate Spark's remarkable life and work through a public artwork in a location befitting her literary stature and enduring connection to Edinburgh.

Following a process of consultation and discussion, the Culture and Communities Committee of the City of Edinburgh Council, has given approval for the Memorial to be situated in East Princes Street Gardens.

Please read the Briefing Document carefully before applying. To apply, artists must register their interest online here.

Expressions of interest will be at artist's own expense, however four shortlisted artists will each be awarded £2,000 and up to £250 expenses to prepare concept designs. From this one artist will be awarded a further £3,500 and up to £750 expenses to prepare detailed designs. Subject to approvals, a budget in the region of £100,000 is available for the commission.
