Traces of Migration

Traces of Migration is a new participatory project exploring migration through personal objects.

Closing date: 24 Apr 2026

Traces of Migration is a new participatory project exploring migration through personal objects. Through metalwork, the project transforms individual stories into crafted forms, fostering empathy, reflection, cultural understanding, and meaningful connections across diverse communities.

The project invites individuals whose lives have been shaped by migration to contribute a personal object of significance, something they brought with them from home, or an item that holds a strong connection to home, along with its story. Each submission will become the starting point for a new piece of metalwork, responding to the emotional value embedded in everyday objects. In doing so, the project creates a platform for cultural exchange and open dialogue around the layered and often complex experiences of migration.

This new body of work builds on Militsa Milenkova’s previous collection, What Could Have Been but Never Was, which explored the emotional impact of migration on family relationships through the reinterpretation of personal objects. In Traces of Migration, she extends the conversation beyond her own experience, opening the process to a wider community of voices and narratives.

The project is being developed with the support of the Visual Artist & Craft Maker Award Glasgow 2025/26 (VACMA), funded by Creative Scotland, during the remainder of Militsa’s residency at the Silversmithing and Jewellery Department at The Glasgow School of Art.
