Soizig Carey is a Glasgow based artist and designer-maker specialising in contemporary jewellery. Her practice is rooted in slow design and making, feminism and anti-capitalist consumer culture. She is acutely conscious of the impact fashion and mining industries have on human labour, supply chains and the environment. She is a Fairtrade Foundation and Fairmined registered jeweller and committed to ethical and sustainable sourcing of materials. As such Soizig does not produce seasonal collections of work, she mainly makes key pieces to order and frequently does bespoke commissions. She sources second hand and responsibly mined stones. Using casting, engraving, embossing and riveting processes, she creates precious metal forms which can be worn or serve as meaningful and playful objects. She is especially drawn towards creating modernist and long-lasting pieces. Collaboration is a very important part of her practice, in particular with women artists whose aims are thought-provoking and playful. Soizig regularly recycles and re-makes heirlooms, modernising symbolic pieces.
