Celebrating the work of ceramic artists; Talks, Market, Workshops, Firing
5 Dec - 7 Dec 2025
It is the time of year for warmth, making and gifts. Hospitalfield bring networks of artists together throughout the year through residencies, study days and learning programmes. With CLAY the common thread between artists and makers is a single material, here we see many different parts of the process of using clay and the astonishing outcome of using earth and heat.
Friday 5 December:
Talk - 6pm
Talk followed by a drink and viewing of the market
In the Picture Gallery a talk with Dr Robin Wilson and Laura Aldridge. They will talk about their thoughts on the social systems that form around the process of making and the use of clay and ceramics processes.
Saturday 6 December:
The Market – 11am – 3pm
Featuring the work of over eighteen different artists and makers based in Angus and far beyond, the CLAY Market aims to present and support an amazing range of ceramicists with many different interests and approaches.
This is an opportunity to speak to the makers, get to know more about their work and buy directly from them. It’s exciting to own or gift something handmade, bought from the person who made it. There is so much time and skill embedded in the making of each object.
Drop-In Workshops - 12 – 3pm
More details to be announced.
Kiln Firing – all day
The new wood burning kiln at Hospitalfield will be fired up at around 7am in the morning. Much like any choriographed performance, a team will keep it firing going throughout the day, getting the kiln to temperature, keeping it going into the evening. It will cool overnight.
Sunday 7 December:
Opening the Kiln – 11am – 12 noon
Join us for brunch and the opening of the kiln. This is only its second firing.
The kiln will have cooled and be ready to open to reveal a hoard of plates. In the gaps between the plates and to make as much use of the space as possible, shot glasses, to be used to toast all future firings.
