There can be many advantages to incorporating cast settings in your jewellery the biggest ones being the ability to realise your designs more efficiently and affordably! This course will help you understand the full variety of setting options available to you as a jeweller – and how to identify where cast settings can provide you with an advantage.
In this course we aim to clarify the entire process of working with cast setting in a simple and accessible way with minimal tools, enabling you to go away to continue setting in your own workshop. You will learn to set in brass pre-cast settings, by setting different-sized, calibrated cubic zirconia stones. With guidance from your tutor, you will learn how to set different shapes of stone using hand tools and the pendant motor.

Topics and techniques covered:

  • why you might choose a cast setting
  • how to properly clean up / prepare a cast setting
  • how to incorporate a setting into a piece (a ring would be ideal for this workshop)
  • how to select the correct size of setting for your stone
  • how to seat the stone correctly using both hand tool and pendant motors
  • how to securely set your stone
  • how to professionally finish and polish your setting

Your tutor:

Your course will be led by jeweller Sophia Hargreaves who has a wealth of experience in both handmaking and manufacturing. She is the force behind industry disruptor, Greens Stone Settings and is passionate about sharing her industry knowledge and making stone setting accessible for all.
