Weave your own small rug from washed sheep's fleeces sourced from local farms in Aberdeenshire.
The Event
Join Marguerite Fleming of Westfield Croft and discover the craft of peg loom weaving to create your own small rug or wall hanging. Using simple tools and natural materials, you will learn how to transform raw fleece into a unique woven and textural piece.
Date: Friday 17 October 2025
Time: 10:00 - 14:00
Price: £70
Throughout the workshop, you will learn how to string a loom, work with different fleeces, and finish off your weaving. The washed fleece comes from native rare breed sheep, sourced from Marguerite’s own smallholding, and local farms across Aberdeenshire. You will explore the qualities of undyed sheep’s wool in a variety of textures and natural tones, with some carded fleece included for contrast.
By the end of the workshop, you will leave with your own woven creation, this could be a seat pad, a small rug, or a wall hanging.
All tools and essential materials will be provided; however, you are welcome to bring along recycled or reclaimed materials, such as tweed, leather, or yarn, to add personalisation to your weaving. Spaces are limited so please book in advance.
Inspired by watching her own sheep being shorn over a decade ago, Marguerite began learning weaving to showcase the beauty of raw fleece. Today, she continues the seasonal rhythm of sourcing, washing, and weaving wool, enjoying the meditative process of turning fleece into something lasting and useful.
This workshop is part of HARVEST: Contemporary Craft Fair, where you can explore a vibrant cross section of contemporary craft being made in Scotland today.
