Frances Priest

Booth TalkFrances Priest

11.30am / Friday 23 February

Ceramicist Frances Priest offers a behind the scenes look into the research and development of her latest body of work which responds to the India section of the seminal Victorian pattern book The Grammar of Ornament by Owen Jones. The talk will begin with her initial research visits to the V&A Prints & Drawings Study Room and the National Museum of Scotland archive, looking at original drawings and a first edition print of The Grammar of Ornament.

Frances will then retrace her path toward the completed pieces, talking through her techniques and making process along the way. She will touch upon a recent first visit to India and reflect upon the influence of this experience on the making of the work. Finally, she will expand upon how her interest in capturing a sense of place through languages of ornament has, for this body of work, focused upon a much-loved book as a treasured place to visit.

Panel TalkTraditions Reimagined

4pm / Friday 23 February

Collect 2018 invite a panel of international makers and gallerists to delve into how traditions from across the globe influence and enrich their practices. Join British Council’s Programme Manager for Design, Gian Luca Amadei in discussion with gallerists, makers and curators, Bev Gibson, Piet Stockmans, Peter Ting and Angus Ross for their global perspective.

Scotland: Craft & Design are delighted to be providing the seating for the Crafts Council’s Talk Programme at Collect this year. Furniture makers Angus Ross, Isabelle Moore and Jonathan Pang will each provide a chair for the guest speakers. You can marvel at Angus's ergonomic tilting Unstable Stools, Isabelle's folded steel chair and Jonathan's chair from his Phloem collection.
