At his studio-workshop in Aberfeldy, Perthshire, Angus Ross bends, moulds, sculpts and folds wood to create site specific furniture commissions for private clients and public spaces. The scale varies from intricate cabinets to groups of large exterior functional art work. He also has a range of limited edition and micro-batch production furniture.
During twenty-five years as a maker Angus has been fascinated by wood, and for the last decade by oak sourced from his local, sustainably managed mixed woodland. The potential supply of this previously under-valued green oak has led to a deep exploration of the ancient art of steam bending. He is now well regarded for achieving new precision, complexity and scale using steam-bending to create gorgeous curvaceous furniture.
As a designer, Angus is principally concerned with interaction, function and narrative and he often introduces an element of surprise. He has a background in product design with a BSc Industrial Design from Napier University, 1985, and experience designing with plastics for mass manufacture. He retrained in furniture making at Rycotewood College, Oxfordshire.
